MOSPOT - 1
The Mospot-1 is a metal testing kit that contains a test for the metal, molybdenum, in the alloy examined.  The test for metal takes less than 30 seconds.  Any alloy that contains molybdenum can be separated from one that does not.  The development of a pinkish or reddish ring will form on the filter paper that has molybdenum.  The results are then compared to the color picture chart or a known sample.  No training in chemistry is needed.  Each spot test kit contains all the necessary materials and reagents.  Over 1000 tests can be performed.  The most common use of the MOSPOT-1 is the separation of 304 stainless steel from 316 stainless steel.

AUSPOT - 2
Using the same metal identification procedures as Mospot-1, Auspot-2 tests for the alloy properties of molybdenum, nickel, copper, and chromium.   This is an excellent general purpose sorting system for the identification of such high alloys as 304 S.S., 316 S.S., MONEL, INCONEL, HASTELLOY B-2, C276, F, G2, Alloy 20 Cb-3, nickel, and cupronickel, among others. All the WAIT kits are completely portable and therefore can be used in the field as well as in the laboratory.

CUSPOT - 3
This copper spot test kit provides metal identification of principal copper alloys, including brasses and bronzes. This alloy analysis kit contains tests for alloy properties contained in copper such as zinc, tin, nickel, aluminum, lead, and manganese. Among the common copper alloys identified are aluminum bronze, phosphor bronze, cupronickel, MONEL, manganese bronze, and leaded brasses etc.  A special feature of the Cuspot-3 metal sorting kit is the inclusion of our popular Brass Spot test.  This copper spot test provides a rapid metal analysis for many brasses and bronzes.

ALSPOT - 4
ALSPOT-4 identifies properties of aluminum alloys in a simple and economical way. This kit separates the aluminum alloy under examination into one of the six various alloy series: 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000, 6000, 7000 as well as some alloys within a series. Elemental analysis include testing metals such as copper, manganese, zinc, and magnesium.

RESPOT - 5
Metal analysis can be especially cost effective  when refractory alloys are involved. RESPOT-5 separation technology easily identifies such metals and alloys as titanium, titanium-palladium, zirconium, columbium(niobium), and tantalum.

TISPOT - 6
This Titanium spot test kit provides rapid metal testing for molybdenum, tin, zirconium, titanium, palladium, aluminum, and vanadium. The investigator can separate metal alloy properties in such common titanium grades as CP (Grade 1 or 2), 6-4 (Grade 5), 5-21/2 (Grade 6), 6-6-2, Ti-). 2pd (Grade 7), 8-1-1, and 6-2-4-2.

S.S. SPOT - 7
S.S. SPOT-7 is an expanded stainless steel testing kit that identifies many of the common 300 and 400 series stainless steels. This stainless steel identification kit is used for testing metals such as molybdenum, nickel, chromium, titanium, niobium, and sulfur. Common application of this metal analyzer would be the separation of such stainless steels as 303, 304, 310, (316, 317), 321, 347, Alloy 20Cb-3, (403, 410, 420, 430), (414, 431), 416, and 440.

T.S. SPOT - 8
Identification of types of steel such as tool steel and low alloy steel are the emphasis of this very versatile kit. Tests for steel include molybdenum, chromium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, vanadium, and tungsten. Examples of various grades of steel identified by this kit are D-2, A-2, A-6, 0-1, 0-2, L-3, 1-6, P-20, P-6, S-4, W-1, W-2, H-11, H-21, M-1, M-2, M-3, T-5, T-15, 4130, 5160, 6150, 8620.

PLASPOT - 9
PLASPOT-9 is a metal identification system designed to provide a nondestructive elemental analysis for various plating and metal coatings. Metal analysis include such platings as zinc, cadmium, lead, nickel, tin, copper, and chromium.

BRASS SPOT TEST
The Brass Spot Test provides for a quick copper spot test of common brasses and bronzes such as Red Brass, "M" Bronze, "G" Bronze, Aluminum Bronze, and Manganese Bronze. Unlike the other W.A.I.T.! spot tests, this test for metal requires a larger sample of the test material and is not considered nondestructive. Besides being part of the Cuspot-3 and Model 2000 kits, it can be ordered separately in a 500 ml (about 16 oz) bottle.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. WHY W.A.I.T.?
The W.A.I.T. (What Alloy Is That) series of non-destructive chemical spot test kits enables anyone, with no previous training or experience, to quickly and accurately separate unknown metals and alloys. No knowledge of metallurgy is needed to get excellent results the first time using our easy-to-follow instructions.

2. HOW DOES THE W.A.I.T. TESTING SYSTEM WORK?
The method involves putting one or two drops of an acidic solution on the center of a piece of white filter paper. The filter paper is then covered by the aluminum disc which is connected to a battery by a wire lead. Another wire with an alligator clip makes contact with the alloy in question, which sets up an electrical circuit.
Current is allowed to flow through the system for a brief period of 30 - 60 seconds. This action dissolves a small amount of the test metal from the alloy onto the filter paper for identification. A color enhancer(s) is then added to react with the presence of the metallic ions that are on the filter paper. This procedure results in a reaction that causes a definite color spot on the filter paper.
Comparison is then made with a color chart or a metal coupon, which facilitates the identification of the metal or alloy. The total time to complete a test varies between 1 - 2 minutes.
Step 1: Drop the solution
Step 2: Extract the metal ions
Step 3: Use the color spot to identify the alloy

3. HOW SIMPLE ARE THE W.A.I.T.!, PLASTIC, AND LEAD TEST KITS TO USE?
All that is required is for the tester to follow the easy one-two-three directions. Detailed instruction booklets are included with each kit.

4. ARE ALL OF THE TESTS NONDESTRUCTIVE?
The W.A.I.T.! kits use less than 0.05 ml of the metal alloy in question. one exception, the BRASS SPOT test, is included with other tests in the CUSPOT-3 copper spot alloy test kit and also is sold separately. This is an excellent test frequently used by recyclers and others but requires the use of a file, which may leave a small mark.
The other exception is the PIK 1903 thermoplastics kit that, by design, contains some destructive tests to identify plastics. See the PIK 1903 information page for more details.

5. DO I NEED ANY OTHER EQUIPMENT TO RUN ANY OF THE TESTS?
No, each kit contains all of the parts necessary for testing besides the test material itself.

6. ARE REPLACEMENT PARTS AVAILABLE?
Solution refills and replacement parts are readily available. We have deliberately designed the kits to be as simple and user friendly as possible. For instance, instead of charging the customer extra for a box with a battery in it, a simple 9 volt battery is used. This allows some parts to be conveniently obtained at local stores.  For other replacement parts, however, please see our ORDERING INFORMATION page for more details.

7. HOW SAFE ARE THE SOLUTIONS?
Although the solutions are in a diluted form, safety procedures and common sense should always be followed. Fenner & Associates, Inc. is not responsible for any misuse of our products. Consulting the Material Safety Data Sheet for each kit is strongly recommended. The kits use battery, leads, and white filter paper together with the chemicals and this method of testing is done for two reasons:
1. To give a clear, definite color for quick, accurate results.
2. To allow for the solutions in the kits to be in a weaker diluted form and thus safer.

8. HOW LONG DO THE SOLUTIONS LAST?
Except for the expanded Recyclers Identification Kit Model 2000 and the All Steel 930 which contains 30 ml or about 1 ounce bottles, all the kits have 60 ml or 2 oz dropping bottles. Since there are about 1200-1400 drops per bottle and each test requires only 1 or 2 drops, at least 600-700 tests can be completed before refills are needed. The normal shelf life of the test solutions is 2 years. We suggest ordering fresh solutions whenever the color checks begin to lose their intensity significantly enough to give doubtful results.

9. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SHIP?
Your order will leave our facility within 3-5 days of order placement. Shipping times vary according to the shipping speed you select.

10. HOW MUCH IS SHIPPING?
We charge a flat shipping and handling rate within the U.S. of $15 per kit. International orders cost $40 per kit for air parcel post.

11. HOW DO I ORDER?
See our ORDERING INFORMATION page for more details on ordering your kits.
